The Important Things

The Important Things What are the most important things in my life? Family is the number one most important thing in my life. My girlfriend, education, career, money and happiness are also very important to me in life. Without my family I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I couldn’t ask for better parents. And I have a little brother I wouldn’t be able to live without. My parents work very hard to provide a wonderful life for us. We really enjoy going camping and taking other vacations together. It gives us a lot of quality time to spend together.My family helps me through the hard times in life. I have the best grandparents in the world that would do anything for me. I have been very fortunate being able to spend lots of time with them while growing up. We have made many special memories together that I will always hold close to my heart. There were six brothers and sisters on my dad’s side and four sisters on my mom’s side. Combining the two, I h ave twelve amazing cousins. We are all very close and get together to celebrate all of the birthdays and holidays.I love my family with all my heart and could never ask for a better one. My girlfriend means the world to me. Not only is she my girlfriend, she is my best friend. She knows how to make me smile when I’m not in a good mood. She is the one person I know I can count on. I love her with all my heart. I will never let her go. We have been together since the beginning of high school. We have a special connection with each other; there is something that will never break us apart. Education is a very important event in my life.Getting laid off for the second winter really inspired me to go back to school. I am now in a four semester program to become a Process Operator. Lewis and Clark provide a great education. I have been working hard and keeping my grades up so that I can graduate on time and look for a better job. My career is what I am working hard in school for now . The right job is out there for me somewhere. After I complete my education, I will find it. I am very determined. I feel that being younger I might have some advantages. My oal is to get hired on at Phillips 66. They will be hiring for the foreseeable future. Nine out of twenty people were hired from the last class that graduated from the program that I am in now. My cousin was one of them. Can money buy happiness? Some people are extremely wealthy but also very lonely, while others are poor but happy with their surrounding family and friends they have. You can buy many things with money but not happiness. There are many ways to obtain money. Some people may work for it while others might win the lottery.I am the type of person who works hard for my money and saves it. The more money I have available the happier I am with myself. I don’t let money take over my life though. I have a roof over my head and a meal to eat every night, so for that I am very happy. Effects of a Breach of Contract There are various types of contract with in the world of law such as civil law which deals with relations between individual citizens where as private law focuses on the relations between ordinary people on a day to day basis, both types of law include the law of contract. A contract is an agreement that is legally enforceable and therefore can be settled within a court of law, however how can we distinguish between a contract and any other form of non-legally enforced statement.If I promised to wash someone’s car yet I don’t in fact wash the car can I be held to a contract? In this case I can not simply because a promise is not a contract although there is no rule stating that all contracts must be in writing in fact a contract can very easily be done verbally or by action of which are known as parol or simple contracts. A statement is only a statement when it holds all four elements these being 1. Offer 2. Acceptance 3. Intention to cre ate legal relations 4.Consideration. Within a contract there are also what are known as clauses which simply express what both parties to the contract have agreed to. An example of a clause would be a car dealer selling his old car and we’d agreed on the price of the car in the process the car dealer says he will fill the car with petrol and I agree to only buy the car as long as there is no more than 15,000 miles on the dial and as long as the car had not been involved in any accidents.When I receive the car the tank is empty however that statement was a representation rather than a term as it did not hold a great deal of importance, however I find out that in fact the car had been involved in a car crash and had more than 15,000 on the dial and therefore the car dealer has breached the contract, therefore legal action can be taken. It is key to note the four tests that are carried out to figure out whether something is a term or representation these are 1.The importance of the statement 2. The time between making the statement and making the contract 3. An oral statement before a written contract 4. One party to the contract has special skills or knowledge. There are 3 types of terms 1. Conditions 2. Warranties 3. Innominate Terms. A condition is a basic but a fundamental part of the contract if breached the other party can end the contract, refuse to perform their part of the contract or continue with the contract but then sue for damages when completed.A warranty on the other had is not a vital part of a contract and if breached the other party must continue with the contract however they can then sue for damages at the end. An example of breaching a condition would be if a contract might specify that ABC Corp sells XYZ Corp 500 umbrellas for ? 5,000 on the condition that the umbrellas are inspected by XYZ Corp. for defects and their quality approved by the company. If the 500 umbrellas are inspected by XYZ Corp and found by that company to be defec tive, the contract becomes void.ABC Corp is not required to deliver the umbrellas, and XYZ Corp is not required to pay for the umbrellas. An example of breaching a warranty would be if a warranty reads â€Å"this umbrella is guaranteed to not tear, rip or break for two years from the date of its purchase. † This is known as an express warranty, because it is very clearly stated. Another type of warranty is known as an implied warranty. Implied warranties are created by state law and essentially guarantee that a product will satisfy its intended purpose.When a warranty on a contract for sale of goods is breached, the party protected by the warranty, or the party purchasing the goods, is entitled to damages. Those damages may be specifically stated in an express warranty. For example, a product may guarantee that a product will last seven years or the purchaser is entitled to her money back. An innominate term can be either a condition or a warranty depending upon how serious h e breach of contract actually is in a court of law if they feel the breach was serious they will consider it as a condition where as if the breach is less serious it will classified as a warranty.Within a contract there is also what is known as implied terms of which are no stated expressly by the parties involved but are still very much regarded as being a term within the contract. Three ways in which an implied term becomes a part of a contract are 1) Implied by statue an example would be the Sale of Goods Act 1979 so if a contract is made regarding food and quality isn’t expressly mentioned within the contract then automatically the Sale of Goods Act 1979 applies therefore making the quality of goods mandatory. ) Implied by custom an example of which would be if a farmer employs a worker within the agreed contact the farmer agrees to provide a place to liv however within the contract itself it does not state which individual will pay for gay, electricity and the use of the telephone. If this case was then taken to court the worker could easily argue that although it was not stated in the contract that it is custom for the farmer to pay for the gas and electricity and that any calls made the worker would then pay for. 3) Implied by court in simple terms is the court changing a contract only if it makes good business sense to do.Within a contract there are also exclusion clauses which are clauses that are written down stating if something was to go wrong that one party can avoid or at the very least limit liability for the breach of contract. For an exclusion clause to actually be properly included within a contract it first must be legal also the clause can not be added after the contract has been made as well as this if there is not an actually signed contract printed documents or sign posts that clearly indicate the terms can also be included within the contract so long as they are brought to the attention of both parties before making the contract. An example would be taking a parking ticket from a ticket machine the individual is only bound by the terms brought to the individual’s attention before taking the actual ticket, simply because a contract is only formed when you take the ticket itself. Therefore a car park owner can not rely upon an exclusion clause that may be printed on the back of the ticket as nothing was done before the ticket was collected to make the individual aware of any exclusion clauses.If the car is then damaged whilst in the car park due to lack of security or care then the car parking company is liable despite the exclusion clause. Innominate Terms The definition of an innominate term is a contractual term that may turn out to be either a condition which is vitally important to a contract or a warranty which has less importance within contract this is dependent upon the effects and damages towards the innocent party.It was first established in the cas e of Hong Kong Fir Shipping v Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and has been heavily criticised as it sacrifices certainty an example of when an Innominate term has been used is Schuler were manufacturers of certain tools and Wickman were a sales company granted the sole right to sell certain tools manufactured by Schuler. A term of the contract between the parties was described in the contract as being a condition and provided that Wickman would send a sales person to each named company once a week to solicit sales.This imposed an obligation to make 1,400 visits in total. Wickman failed to make some of the visits and Schuler terminated the contract for breach of condition. Despite the fact the contract had expressly stated the term was a condition, the House of Lords held that it was only a warranty. [Schuler v Wickman Tools  [1974] AC 235  House of Lords]. My own personal view is that there is a place for innominate terms in contract law, even though there are flaws it allows for a court of law to look into a contract that may be very much one sided to one party and level the playing fields.Many terminations in a contract are used as a condition even though the stated terms are not vitally important and are simply there to have an edge over the other party involved. Therefore I strongly believe that a court being able to look over a contract and even the situation when one party is clearly taking full advantage of the other is a reasonable and sound procedure.             Human Resources in the Recession: Managing and Representing People at Work in Ireland; William K Roche, Paul Teague, Anne Coughlan, Majella Fahy. The effects of the Irish recession on the manner in which people are managed at work and on how they are represented by trade unions is the subject of this study. This study examines how human resource managers and unions (where they are found) have faced the challenges. First of all, the impact of the international financial and economic crisis on the Irish labor market is assessed. Then, the Irish economic crisis is placed in a comparative European context to get a sense of the extent to which the public policy response in Ireland has been similar to those pursued by other EU member states. After this assessment a detailed literature review is conducted on reviews and debates concerning the impact of recessions, past and present, on the conduct of human resources in organizations. This is followed by a detailed examina tion of the type of policies and practices that are available to HR when making adjustments to difficult business conditions. The research has used a survey conducted of managers with responsibility for human resources to assess their responses to the recession. The survey firstly sought to examine the impact of the recession on firms in terms of revenue and employment change, in order to establish the commercial context for any recessionary measures adopted. The subjects of examination are then the types and incidence of measures taken by firms, ranging from pay and headcount adjustments, changes in HR systems and functions, to changes in working time arrangements. The responses of the firms reflect the severe effects and challenges experienced by the survey respondents. This is followed by an investigation into the role of the HR function in the recession. The section explores whether the operation of HR has changed as a result of the recession, the function’s level of infl uence in terms of HR strategy formulation and implementation, the business role of HR, the level of engagement with employees, types of policies and practices that have received greater or lesser attention and relationships with trade unions. Finally, the HR practices that survey respondents considered to be most effective in helping them manage the recession are investigated. Examination of the effects of the recession, as experienced by thirty HR  managers, representing a wide range of businesses, who participated in the different focus groups is entailed. It reviews, in detail, the effects on HR of acute cost, headcount and productivity pressures and the range of retrenchment measures that they were required to put in place. The research then examines HR managers’ understanding of what constitutes ‘good human resource practice’ in recent and current recessionary conditions. The main HR practices that were identified in the literature include – wage ad justment; employment adjustment; re-organization of working time; workforce stabilization; employability; voice and engagement; and process or product innovation. By and large, while most of the measures adopted were aimed at reducing pay costs in one way or another, Irish firms have been quite diverse with respect to the range of measures that have been implemented to steer their way through the recession. The survey results also show that HR mangers have been steadfast with regard to implementing the ‘softer’ side of HR practices.             Impact of the Recession on the Labor Market in the South East; Annette Cox, Terence Hogarth, Thomas Usher, David Owen, Freddie Sumption, Joy Oakley. This study focused on analyzing the impact of economic downturn on skills needs and training practices within different sectors in the South East, focusing on a mixture of sectors which were seriously affected by recession and those which might lead the recovery. The research consisted of two phases: the first involving quantitative analysis and literature review, and the second involving qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with stakeholders and employers. The research concluded that the Impact of Recession on Employers’ Current and Future Skills Needs and Training Practices is conditional. Small organizations are reported to be more likely to reduce training investment than large firms and commitment to training varies by sector, There is an increased demand for ‘short and sharp’ courses, Training opportunities are being targeted at senior staff and trainees, Employers are receiving high numbers of applications and using tighter screening criteria and Multi-skilling needs are developing as a result of expansion or contraction of business.             The impact of the economic recession on hR; Talent 2 and Ipsos MORI This study is based on a survey. Senior HR professionals were asked about how the global recession is affecting their organizations and their people management strategies and practices. 200 senior HR Directors and VPs were invited to participate in the survey, and 73 completed it. The findings of the survey were that HR is greatly affected by recession in the economy. Three in five respondents felt that the current capital markets had a direct impact on their organization, with three- quarters also feeling they have a direct impact on HR. Similarly, the vast majority of organizations (95%) were either freezing, or decreasing, their annual HR budget, in areas such as training and development, external training, the use of external consultants, recruitment and HR systems. Evidence suggests this is likely to be the case regardless of what the predicted financial performance is for their organization. The top three priorities selected were Performance management; Leadership and management development; and Employee communication and engagement.             The Impact of the Recession on Employment-Based Health Coverage ; Paul Fronstin This article focuses on the impact of the recession on employment-based health coverage. This Issue Brief examines changes in health coverage among workers during the recession that started in December 2007, including monthly changes for 2007 and May 2008−July 2009. The emphasis is on changes that occurred between September 2007 and April 2009. While health coverage through the work place is by far the most common source of health insurance among the population under age 65, the recession that started in December 2007 is associated with a change in employment- based coverage and the uninsured. Workers least likely to have employment-based coverage at the beginning of the recession were more likely than other workers to experience a decline in the percentage with such coverage one year later. Younger workers were more likely to lose coverage than older workers. Hispanic workers we re more likely to lose coverage than whites or blacks. Part-time workers were more likely than full-time workers to have lost employment-based coverage. The percentage of workers with own name employment-based coverage declined the most for those employed with  for-profit private- sector employers and those employed by the federal government. The largest declines in the percentage of workers with employment-based coverage in their own name by firm size occurred in the smallest firms, those least likely to offer coverage. Workers who were members of a union were less likely to have experienced a loss of employment- based coverage than were nonunion workers. Workers with the lowest earnings were the least likely to have employment-based coverage in their own name and experienced the largest decline in coverage.

Biomechanical Principles In Basketball Essay Basketball is a very competitive and popular sport in our society today. The NBA playoffs are going on right now and it has proved to be a very physical and intense post season. This sport takes an extreme amount of talent, coordination, and athletic ability to become a champion. There are a few biomechanical principles that are present during the game of basketball that help these athletes become great. The first biomechanical principle that is present in basketball is Newton’s Second Law of Motion. This law deal deals with acceleration in the sport. The law states, â€Å"The change in motion of an object is proportional to the force impressed; and is made in the direction of the straight line in which the force is impressed†. Newton’s Second Law is applied to the dunking aspect of basketball. When a player is about to dunk the basketball a certain amount of force must be produced to jump. Also a certain amount of acceleration must be produced to send the player upwards towards the rim. If this does not happen then the player is going to not be able to dunk the basketball. The weight of the athlete also plays a big role in this action as well. A player who is heavier is going to have a harder time jumping as high as a player with less mass. The next biomechanical principle I found that deals with basketball is another Newton law. Newton’s First Law deals with the law of inertia. This law is applied when a player is attempting a pass to his or her teammate. Newton’s First Law states that an object will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force. When a player is passing the ball to their teammate, the ball will stay in a straight line of motion unless a member of the opposing team attempts to steal the ball from its destination. Lastly frictional force is another biomechanical principle that I found present in the game of basketball. The friction between the athlete’s shoes and floor must be very high. Static friction is used when the player wants to push off from the floor to make an athletic move. The type of shoes that the athlete wears is also going to play a huge role in how affective the players’ moves are. Frictional for occurs when the player pushes down and backward on the floor. It is the force that acts forwards on the player and backwards on the floor. If it was not for frictional forces the athlete would not be able to start or stop his or her motion. In conclusion I found this biomechanical breakdown to be very interesting. Now that I have taken this course I look at sports from a greater biomechanical perspective. I feel that taking this course will really pay off as I become a professional in the field. Being able to break down sports into such a perspective is a great attribute to have as a future professional.

Benefits of Quality Control THE QUALITY CONTROL ERA The inspection-based approach to quality was challenged by Walter A. Shewhart. Shewharts landmark 1931 book Economic Control of Quality of Manufacturing introduced the modern era of quality management. In 1924, Shewhart was part of a group working at Western Electrics Inspection Engineering Department of Bell Laboratories. Other members of the group included Harold Dodge, Harry Romig, G.D. Edwards, and Joseph Juran, a veritable whos who of the modern quality movement. The new concept of quality included ideas that were quite radical at the time. Shewhart recognized that variation could never be completely eliminated. Try as one might, no two things could ever be made exactly the same. Thus, he reasoned, attempts to eliminate variability were certain to fail. Then Shewhart took a huge conceptual leap: the central task of quality control was not to identify variation from requirements, it was to distinguish between variation that was a normal result of the process and variation that indicated trouble. This insight lead directly to Shewharts now famous concept of statistical control. The concept is explained by Shewhart as follows: A phenomenon will be said to be controlled when, through the use of past experience, we can predict, at least within limits, how the phenomenon may be expected to vary in the future. Here it is understood that prediction means that we can state, at least approximately, the probability that the observed phenomenon will fall within the given limits. Shewharts approach to quality was to identify the limits of variation that could be expected from a process operating in a normal state. To do this he developed simple statistical and graphical tools that could be used to study data obtained from a process. Unlike inspection, Shewharts approach did not require 100% inspection or sorting; samples could be used. Furthermore, as long as the process variability was less than the design required, one could be assured that acceptable process quality was being maintained. Shewharts approach is known today as statistical process control, or SPC. SPC remains one of the quality professionals most powerful tools, in a form largely unchanged from Shewharts original presentation. WHAT DOES QUALITY MEAN Quality means fulfilling the customers requirements and expectations, at all times. It is also important to bear in mind that quality standards must be set to meet legal requirements. As the customers requirements are typically higher than legal ones, standards set by authorities should be regarded as minimum or bottom-line requirements. WHAT DOES QUALITY CONTROL MEAN A set of procedures taken to assure that a product manufactured or service delivered would meet defined quality requirements or customers needs. War has occurred in several occasions throughout history. We've had several important wars in the twentieth century, World War I and World War II, and Vietnam. Each and every war has had an effect on those who lived through it, and those who fought in it. Poets write about what effects, and inspires them. If they were soldiers in war they often times have a strong opinion of war. This comes out in their poetry. Seigfried Sassoon, and Rupert Brooke were English poets who both served in World War I. Sassoon, a true survivor of trench warfare, wrote, 'Everyone Sang'; protecting war. While Brooke, who did not see the trenches, wrote, 'The Soldier';, and a patriotic war-supporting poem. Each man wrote a splendid war poem, but each from different spectrums of war.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  'Everyone Sang'; is a two stanza, five-line poem that says so much about the imprisonment of war. The poem was written right after Sassoon's release from the British army. He is so overjoyed to be released that he compares it too, '…prisoned birds must find in freedom Winging wildly across the white Orchards…'; Like many other poets, he is terrified by war and was 'filled with such delight'; to be out. Sassoon witnessed the brutality on war, which hardened him to the idea of patriotism. 'Everyone Sang'; is a rejoice of freedom until the final two lines. '…O, but everyone Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.'; Sassoon is reflecting on the realities of war. He implies that even though he is 'free'; and will always be rejoicing, he will never be free from the thoughts and memories of war. He has a very strong patriotic love of England. Brooke's wrote, 'The Soldier';, a traditional sonnet. He praises the wonderful land of England. 'Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of England's breathing English air….'; He is loyal to his country for it has been good to him, and he will honor his country by dying for it.

There have been many U.F.O sightings around the world one sighting was on June 24th 1947 Kenneth Arnold was flying over the Cascade Mountains when a set of nine strange looking objects flying across the sky. At first he thought they were reflections of the sun but after looking at them more closely he realized that they were objects flying in formation. The objects he saw had wings what were curved and shaped like a crescent moon. His next thought was that they were some new aircraft that the Air Force was developing and he started to time them on his clock. He calculated that they were flying much faster than any aircraft he had read about. This was a strange case indeed was this alien space ships or was the government making aircrafts if so why where they never reviled. One of the first people to claim to have been abducted by Aliens where Betty and Barney Hill. During September 1961 they were driving back from a holiday in Canada through the White Mountains. They noticed a light that seemed to be following them they assumed that it was an airplane or helicopter. After driving for a while they were forced to stop the car because the light had descended rapidly and was now much closer. Barney got out to get a better look with the aid of his binoculars, and described the object as banana like with pointed tips and windows. Barney started to walk slowly towards the craft, and it was only after several desperate calls from his wife's that he returns to the car. He claimed to have see aliens through the window. At this they drove back home. However, they soon realized that more than an hour of time was 'lost' and noticed that the car had strange blotches on it. Betty reported it to Pease Air Force Base who confirmed that they had indeed tracked an unknown object around that time and location. Soon afterward Betty began having strange nightmares involving 'aliens'. She consulted several doctors who suggested hypnosis. Dr Benjamin Simon who was amazed by what the couple were independently describing hypnotized both the Hills.

My Family: A Subculture Everyone in the world belongs to a subculture. Each subculture has its own sets of traditions, relics, and artifacts. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. Families are good examples of subcultures. My family, a middle-class suburban Detroit family of Eastern European heritage, has helped shape who I am through story telling about traditions, artifacts, and relics. Throughout my life, I've heard many different stories about my family. Because of these stories, I know about my background, and they have helped form my identity. Randall Bass, professor of English at Georgetown University, agrees that stories help shape people's identities. Bass states that, "Individuals derive their sense of identity from their culture, and cultures are systems of belief that determine how people live their lives" (Bass 1). Cultural stories about family history, religion, nationality, and heritage help influence people's behavior and beliefs. Identities of different people come from their cultures. Story telling begins at home. Stories help connect people to their systems of beliefs. They sculpt people's lives by giving them a model of how to live. People receive their earliest knowledge from different stories.(Bass) One great story my family has told me is my family's history. My maternal grandmother's parents came to the United States from Ukraine by boat around 1906 or 1907. They initially settled in Export, PA, because they had relatives and friends living there. My grandmother was born in 1921 and was the seventh of eight children. A year after she was born, they moved to Warren, OH, where they stayed until my grandmother graduated from high school. The family's religion was Ukrainian Orthodox. My grandmother grew up speaking Ukrainian and English. Ukrainian was spoken in the home, and English was spoken at school. My grandmother started kindergarten at the age five knowing no English. She picked up the English language from her classmates. My grandmother's family did not own a car. Every Easter, they walked about seven miles to go to church. My grandmother grew up during the depression. She was the only girl in her family to own a doll from a store. All of her sister's dolls were homemade.

Magnifying and Obscuring Essay

The stories of John Updike’s â€Å"A&P† and William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily† both make use of the first person point of view in narration but with very different and quite powerful effects that also affect other elements of the story. The ways in which these two stories play with the individual elements of a piece of fiction show just how important it is to make sure that these individual elements are all taken cared of and built-up with equal care and attention, because a problem with one element can result into a problem with the entire story; the elements must all be able to work together to support each other and to weave a tight story. â€Å"A&P† uses the first person, non-omniscient, singular point of view (POV) narration to build rapport with the main character, Sammy [for example: â€Å"I’m in the third check-out slot, with my back to the door, so I don’t see them until they’re over by the bread; I could see Lengel in my place in the slot, checking the sheep through. † (Updike 560)]. This connection with Sammy is a very important one because it is pretty much the driving force of the story; learning of what’s going on in a teenage boy’s head while there are half-naked girls walking about can make an interesting read. This point of view is really what helps push the reader on along as she or he plods through the â€Å"A&P† plot. With â€Å"A Rose for Emily†, on the other hand, we are given the first person, non-omniscient, plural point of view. Obviously, because it is plural it cannot be the view of the main character, Miss Emily Grierson. Instead we seem to have the entire story narrated to us by the entire town [â€Å"When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral; for a long while we just stood there, looking down at the profound and fleshless grin† (Faulkner)]. This works to increase the mystery that surrounds Miss Emily and her house because we never really knew what she is thinking or feeling. This point of view, giving an air of mystery, again, helps push the reader on to discover what happens throughout the story. Relating with the use of the POV are the different story plots. Here, we can see a great difference between â€Å"A&P† and â€Å"A Rose for Emily† because we find that one is mainly character-driven while the other has a strong plot that keeps the readers going through the story. It is â€Å"A&P† that is, obviously, character-driven because of its simple plot of a boy wanting to elicit the attention of some pretty girls, which is quite common. Even the events in the story and the simple chronological way that it folds are quite ordinary; it is really Sammy – his thoughts and his feelings – that make a reader interested in the story. And, even up to the ending, readers are all interested only in Sammy’s fate and no one else’s [â€Å"I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter† (Updike 564)]. In â€Å"A Rose for Emily†, on the other hand, we have a story with a strong plot, aided by the effective point of view narration, which moves the story along. The story hooks readers into the plot by making them curious about who Miss Emily Grierson is from the very beginning – readers are wondering why she is a â€Å"fallen monument† and what is so interesting about the â€Å"inside of her house† (Faulkner). The non-linear timeline that the story follows also strengthens the mystery of Miss Emily because the building block to her life must be pieced together slowly and with a certain amount of intuition, at first. Now, the characters of the two stories are also very different – one is as open to us as a book laid flat-open, while the other is mystery to the very end. With Sammy of â€Å"A&P†, we never seem to see a concrete glimpse of in terms of physical appearance but the readers would all know him if they met him. The first person narration lets us in on all the things that makes Sammy think and tick with that little grocery stop. In his observation of the girls, we find a young man with a keen eye and, also, an eye for beauty. He also shows us the ability of a good imagination when he imagines how the girls behave and how their relationships with each other must be like as when he describes the tall girl as: â€Å"a tall one, with black hair that hadn’t quite frizzed right, and one of these sunburns right across under the eyes, and a chin that was too long — you know, the kind of girl other girls think is very â€Å"striking† and â€Å"attractive† but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so much. † (Updike 561) Sammy, as we can surmise, is a boy that is very much in-touch with his surroundings and his imagination. The characterization of Miss Emily, in contrast, is one that is left murky and shadowy. Because we only see her through the townspeople’s eyes, we never really see her clearly; we can only watch her through the stories, the memories, and the patchwork guesses that these observers give us. But even from this blurry view of Miss Emily through a window, we can see how guarded and closed-off she is from her environment [as when she acted ignorant of Colonel Sartoris’ death (Faulkner)] – the total opposite of Sammy. In â€Å"A&P†, we are set-up in a small grocery store that effectively concentrates our attention on no one and nothing else but Sammy and his current preoccupation. The A&P grocery store acts as the perfect magnifying glass to help us focus on our main character and how he deals with the current situation. â€Å"A Rose for Emily† is set-up up throughout decades of a life and in different places of the town; this manner of a setting makes for even more mystery as the reader tries to fill in all the gaps between the years that the narrators had no contact nor any knowledge of what went on in Miss Emily’s life. The vast setting diffuses the readers’ minds and it wanders across time and space, searching for a complete picture of Miss Emily Grierson. These two stories, perhaps more different than alike, prove that good stories don’t need to follow a certain pattern to mold in order to be good; it is in the writer and the dedication to his work that makes a story count.
